Cohansey Riverfest Plein Air

“Cohansey Time” watercolor by Yvonne Mucci 11×14 available
Initial graphite sketch.

Cumberland County’s Cohansey Riverfest Plein Air event is held annually in mid August. It is hosted by Gallery 50 located in Bridgeton, NJ. I love participating in this event because it calls attention to the Cohansey River. This is one of the most important water sheds in Southern New Jersey. The 111-square-mile Cohansey River Watershed encompasses one of the largest expanses of quality wetlands in the state.

I set up along the shore at the Bait Box. Beautiful, quiet, and peaceful scene. Each artist was allowed to enter two paintings. Both of mine will be on display during the month of September starting with an artist reception September 6th, 6:30pm, Gallery 50 on Commerce street in Bridgeton, NJ. See you there!

This painting is mounted on hardboard, spray varnished, and cold waxed which eliminates the need for mat and glass.

“View from Bacons Neck Road” watercolor by Yvonne Mucci 5×7 sold

This was my 2nd painting for the day. Caught this red barn on my way to the Bait Box and had to do a little color sketch. Such a perfect way to spend the day!

Both paintings will be available at Gallery 50.

Almost Winter

The morning started with fog so thick I wasn’t sure about being on time to have my paper stamped at Gallery 50 for the Four Color Plein Air event. It had lifted by the time I got there. Should have been really cold out, I sure dressed for it, but turned out to be sunny and 62º.

I wanted to paint along the Cohansey river. Heading south out of Bridgeton, New Jersey I followed the road and caught a clear view to my right. Plenty of room for my car and easel. Great day of painting, had several local residents stop to see how the painting was progressing. They love this area as do I! “Almost Winter” watercolor is 9×12.

Artist reception is January 5th, 6pm at Gallery 50 in Bridgeton, NJ. I am looking forward to seeing what everyone painted on this beautiful day! This painting has been sold.

Bullitt House Gardens

Bullitt House Gardens watercolor for 2022 Plein Air Easton Quick Draw (Sold)

Who doesn’t love the Quick Draw event during Plein Air Easton. Yes, it is crazy hot, usually in the high 90s. But so worth it because the caliber of art is amazing. Hard to believe what can be accomplished in two hours. That means in a frame on your easel and ready to be sold.

The Bullitt House and gardens are a perfect subject and a lot of artists chose this locations. I can attest that no two paintings looked alike. Time is limited, but you are allowed to set up your easel ahead of time. You cannot put a mark on your canvas till you hear the start horn. The thumbnail is the only reason I can get through the event. It is a blueprint, a plan, gives you a bit of confidence before you start.

Chadd Ford Paint Out

johnchaddhouse-springhouse-mucci

“John Chad House” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14, Sold)

Chadds Ford Paint Out is one of the few winter plein air events on the east coast. No awards are given, just a whole lot of great painting. This was the first day of painting on a low light and cold day. The temperature was above freezing and with the addition of hand warmers in my boots I had a full day of painting. Winter is an amazing time to paint because everything is exposed and the gentle color is beautiful.

This event is hosted by Chadds Ford Historical Society. Artwork remains on exhibit for sale at CFHS through 3/2/18 www.chaddsfordhistory.org

Approaching – Watercolor

approaching_mucci_watercolor

“Approaching” watercolor is a view of the Delaware river. It was late in the day which made the colors more intense. This painting was started as a demonstration for Salem County Art League and finished in studio. It was a great example of how to exaggerate a watercolor bloom to show heaviness in the clouds of the approaching storm.

We’re coming into fall, with it’s bursting color. Next week is Plein Air Brandywine Valley, an exciting event showcasing 80 artists. Can’t wait!

This watercolor was displayed in Gallery 50’s Nature and The Landscape exhibit.

“Approaching” inquiries to mucciyvonne@yahoo.com. It is matted and framed to 16 x 20. Shipping is available.

Stilt House “Locally Raised” – Watercolor

locally_raised_mucci_watercolor

“Locally Raised” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 14 x 11)

“Locally Raised” watercolor was painted for Cedarburg Plein Air gems which was the last day of the event. Lots of people were out and about, enjoying the town of Cedarburg, WI.

In the early 1900’s, the owner of the tavern asked the city for permission to add a second floor onto the existing building. After the city denied his request, he raised the building up on “stilts” and built a first floor underneath. Hence the name Stilt House. They have great food!

Hayrake – Watercolor

“Hayrake” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 14 x 11, Sold)

A retired hayrake sits rusting in front of a well preserved blue-gray barn in the Hamilton Historic District. This glade leading up to the barn glowed in the late afternoon sun. It was magical! Best part was being able to enjoy the company of friends while I finished painting.

“Hayrake” was painted during the Cedarburg Plein Air competition. Fabulous event, even better people. Thank you to Cecily and John who give me free reign to paint on their property.

Faded Blues – Watercolor

“Faded Blues” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14, available)

When it is full summer and you’re painting plein air, sometimes you want a subject without a lot of green. That’s one of the reasons I chose to paint “Faded Blues”. Loved the old wood and missing shutter on this building that was being restored. It used to be a general store on Still Pond Road.

Such a rainy week for the Chestertown RiverArts “Paint The Town” plein air competition, but it did not stop any of the artists from producing quality work. The misting actually helped me apply texture on the blue clapboard.

“Creekside” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14, available)

“Creekside” watercolor was painted on a gorgeous day of plein air painting at the end of Rileys Mill Road in Chestertown, MD. Sunshine peaked in and out of the clouds all day at RiverArts 7th Annual “Paint The Town” plein air competition. I loved the duck blind sitting on the edge of the creek and the silver reflections of sky.

White Swan Tavern – Quick Paint

“White Swan Tavern” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14, available)

“White Swan B&B” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14, available)

So how does a watercolor artist paint in the rain? By bringing your big beach umbrella and crossing your fingers! My quick paint experiences are never great, full of stress, and limited to two hours including framing. But I do them to challenge myself. Pushing to make quick decisions on color and composition.

“White Swan Tavern” was painted for the RiverArts 7th Annual “Paint The Town” plein air competition in Chestertown, MD. The 18th century Bed and Breakfast is located near Washington College in the center of Chestertown historic district.

Had a great time painting at the RiverArts 7th Annual “Paint The Town” in Chestertown, MD. We could paint anywhere in picturesque Kent County. Betterton Beach was beautiful in the pouring rain! I simplified the dock a bit to give the overall painting a peaceful feel.

Such a fun plein air competition, I’ll definitely be back next year to paint the town! Special thanks goes out to Cindy for her fabulous hospitality.

Morning Walk – Watercolor

Morning Walk watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14, Sold)

Morning Walk watercolor was painted during the Plein Air Brandywine Valley exhibit at Winterthur Museum and Garden.  It depicts a little hiking trail behind Winterthur called Chandler Woods. I walked this trail and the adjacent meadow just on the outskirts of Winterthur after turning in my remaining paintings for the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition. Great fun painting and conversing with patrons!

I have to say thank you to every person who had a hand in making this event a success.  The tireless hours spent procuring locations, coordinating artists, feeding artists, exhibiting and selling the artwork is greatly appreciated!  Every sale benefits Children’s Beach House, a nonprofit that focuses on children with special needs. http://www.cbhinc.org

Winterthur Fireworks watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 16 x 20)

As far as painting locations go, one can never go wrong with Winterthur Museum and Gardens.  Day four of Plein Air Brandywine valley was spent near the gazebo. I wanted a different subject that played against all the bursting fall color.

This painting was donated to Children’s Beach House to be sold during their Winter White event on December 4th. Children’s Beach House is a nonprofit that focuses on special-needs children. http://www.cbhinc.org   What a fabulous event for a great cause!

Indian Summer watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 20 x 16, Sold)

Imagine being able to walk through pastures of an amazing property and paint anywhere you wish! That was my experience at the Bright property on day three of the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition. I set up my easel on one of the back pastures with rolling hills on all sides and painted the view of the main barn. The title, Indian Summer, describes this day in late October which was filled with warm sunshine and beautiful fall colors.

Met lots of other artists and photographers, all enjoying this location while creating stunning artwork to help support Children’s Beach House, a nonprofit that focuses on special-needs children.  www.cbhinc.org  All of the artwork was then put up for exhibit and sale over the weekend at Winterthur Museum and Gardens.

The Stuff of Legends – Watercolor

Stuff of Legends watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

The Stuff of Legends watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14, Sold)

This watercolor was a commission to be gifted for the recipient’s 40th birthday. Their party was a Great Gatsby theme and featured on “My Fab 40th” Bravo TV, hence the name of the painting, “The Stuff of Legends”. I thought it was a really unique keepsake, something they’ll be able to tell a few stories about years down the road. The amount of drawing before painting was pretty involved. Getting those angles right was crazy time consuming. I also masked the top of the structure so that I could do multiple layers in the sky area to achieve the intense blue color which made the home stand out. Below is a detail of the drawing and initial washes. Commission inquiries to mucciyvonne@yahoo.com ©Yvonne Pecor Mucci. All rights reserved. Plein Air Brandywine Valley

Plein Air Brandywine Valley 2015 Juried Competition

Plein Air Brandywine Valley 2015,  Juried Competition to benefit Children’s Beach House

Tomorrow, at sunrise, I’ll be setting up my easel in the beautiful Brandywine Valley to paint alongside some of the best plein air painters and photographers. 75 to be exact!  During the next four days, we’ll capture a wide variety of scenic properties located in the Brandywine Valley.  Last year the weather was a bit wet, but it did not hinder this fabulous event.  Looks like sunshine will be in abundance, so I can’t wait to start painting!

Each artist submits at least four paintings which are judged and then displayed for viewing and purchase at an opening gala scheduled for Friday, October 23 from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at The Visitor Center of Winterthur Museum and Garden located in Wilmington, DE.  Gala tickets can be purchased online www.pleinairbrandywinevalley.org  A portion of the proceeds from the art sales will benefit Children’s Beach House. A great organization doing a world of good!  www.cbhinc.org

The works will remain on display for purchase and viewing throughout the remainder of the weekend and are free to the public. (Saturday, October 24, 2015 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday, October 25, 2015 from noon – 3 p.m.) I’ll be at Winterthur Saturday and Sunday afternoon if anyone wants to stop by and check out all the artwork.  It really is a beautiful exhibit!

Red Bank Battlefield – Watercolor

Red Bank Battlefield watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Sold)

The 1748 James & Ann Whithall home sits along the Delaware River across from Philadelphia. Patriots defended the river against the British during the American Revolution. The home was converted to a field house. This watercolor was painted on location during two weather perfect days.  It is of the home looking north.  The river sits to the left.  Red Bank Battlefield is well worth the trip, especially if the house is open for tours. The Perfect Spot – Cedarburg Plein Air

theperfectspot_mucci

Had a fun time scouting around in the Wildcat convertible!  We came around the bend in the road to this absolutely perfect spot.  The barn, grasses, silo, everything was just right!  It felt like I was standing in a painting, so the last day and a half of the Cedarburg Plein Air competition was spent by the side of the road in pure heaven!  That’s why I named this watercolor “The Perfect Spot”.

This wonderful plein air event has 150 artists participating and creating over 500 paintings during the course of one week.  I appreciate all of their hard work and am so thrilled to have been part of it.  Of course none of it would be possible without the support of my family.  Being able to share the celebration with family and friends warms my heart.  Can’t wait till next year!

Cool Run – Cedarburg Plein Air

Cool Run watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Cool Run watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

It was a nice hot sunny day in Cedarburg, perfect for painting en plein air.  The moving water of Cedar Creek was both mesmerizing and challenging.  The cool water running over the dam and cascading down the rocks mid creek was bright white in the sunlight.  My goal in this watercolor was to preserve those whites along with trying to keep a loose feel to the painting.  This location was popular and it was nice to have the company of other artists while painting.  Each artist’s view was completely different even though we were standing only a few paces apart.

This watercolor painting is available for purchase.

If you blink, you’ll pass this little gem in the Hamilton Historic District.  This Apothecary Shop, built between 1860 and 1864, was a general store before and after the civil war.  It is now a beautifully restored private home.  The owner graciously gave me a tour which made me we wish this quaint historic stone building was mine!  Thanks to the Rasmussen family who let me paint in their driveway!

Gingerbread – Cedarburg Plein Air

Gingerbread watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Gingerbread watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Day two and three of Cedarburg Plein Air found me in the middle of town with way too many subject choices. I could spend weeks painting and only touch upon the abundance of interesting surroundings.

The Gingerbread embellishment on the 1849 Kuehfuss house is what drew me in. Of course once you start it, you ask yourself why in the world did I choose this building. So much detail for plein air, but the way the light hit the building and the picket fence made me jump in with both feet. Besides, figuring it out is half the challenge!

Downtown was full of people and I think most stopped to chat or take a look at the process. At one point I felt like I was giving a watercolor demo. The kids had the best questions!

This painting was not exhibited at the cultural center. I wish we were allowed to exhibit more than two paintings for the main event.

This watercolor painting was donated to Cedarburg Art Museum for a fund raising event.

Heading Out – Cedarburg Plein Air

Heading Out watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Heading Out watercolor by Yvonne Decor Mucci (Available)

The annual Cedarburg Plein Air competition has quickly become one of my favorite events.  Port Washington, WI was the first of 8 days of painting en plein air.  My nephew and I scouted this beautiful town and we both agreed that the subject matter had to include water and at least one of their two lighthouses.

I started painting in the early morning as the last bits of orange and yellow left the sky. I was lucky to catch the fishing boats heading out onto Lake Michigan. The boats were back around lunchtime, but I didn’t wrap up till late in the day.

I came across this old barn in the town of Mullica Hill.  These treasures are slowly disappearing, whether it is from harsh weather or community growth.  I can’t resist painting these structures, especially when they are lit up by the sun.

Our Spot watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 20 x 16, Sold)

“Our Spot” watercolor was my final painting for the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition.  I had visited Winterthur two years ago in the spring and loved this particular tree that was stretching out over a bench.  Thought it was in the azalea garden and it took me quite awhile to find it in the peony garden.  The spot was even more beautiful with the fall color bursting around the garden bench.  While painting, I wondered how many had rested or had a conversation in that exact spot.

This competition ended with a gala held at Winterthur Museum & Gardens in the visitor center.  There had to be over 400 paintings from 75 artists.  Every sale benefits The Children’s Beach House, a nonprofit which helps special needs children.  www.cbhinc.org

Thank you to everyone that lent a hand to this competition.  Can’t wait to participate again next fall!

White Barn watercolor was painted on the second day of the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition.  This was the only sunny warm day to be found those four days in October!  It was the kind of day that most people envision when you tell them all painting is completed from start to finish outdoors.  A perfect day!

What’s In The Barn – Watercolor

What's In The Barn Watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

What’s In The Barn Watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 17 x 20, Sold)

The collecting and restoring of antique autos is a lifelong passion equal to that of an artist. The idea of this watercolor painting came from the owner of this beautiful 1948 Willys Overland Jeepster. His dairy barn was the perfect setting. The chickens were a little whimsy thrown in! I thought showing the sliding barn doors added more interest. My brother and sister-inlaw helped slide those barn doors around while I took lots of reference photos. Fun painting from concept to finish!  Thank you to John and Cecily.

A very gray, hazy day resulted in this watercolor painting of the jetty down the shore.  When the tide is at the halfway point, fishing abounds!

This watercolor is part of the “Nature & The Landscape, An Environmental Perspective” exhibition at Gallery 50 in Bridgeton, NJ.  This regional wetlands competition resulted in a lot of gorgeous paintings from artists living in southern New Jersey.
