Along The Road

“Along The Road” by Yvonne Mucci (Available 10.5×14, framed 16×20)

Artists, while driving, pass beautiful properties and farms thinking “oh, I’ve got to go back and paint that scene”. Along The Road was painted for Land Art Events. Happy Hollow Farm was so interesting with all those windows. You never see barns like that! Lots of locals waved, tooted their horns, and said hello while I was painting. Farm To Table Plein Air Show and Palette to Palate Event.
The 2020 event has been rescheduled to October 22, 23, 24 2021 at Goshen Hill Farm in Malvern, PA. Events that serve to engage the public in conversations about art, land conservation and agricultural stewardship. Kathe Odom is juror of selection and John Brandon Sills will judge the plein air paintings. All work exhibited was created on private and public lands permanently protected by the Willistown Conservancy Trust.

I love being where the sky meets the ocean. Throughout the day, nature puts on a show. Often, I cannot leave till the last bit of light fades away. “Solo Flight” watercolor received People’s Choice award in the Nature and The Landscape competition at Gallery 50 in Bridgeton, NJ. What a thrill it is to hear your name announced! Thank you to everyone who voted for this painting. Nature and The Landscape exhibit runs through the end of September.

Artist’s Day in Mauricetown, NJ resulted in “Green Shutters” watercolor.  This historic seafaring town sits along the Maurice River. Every year Mauricetown Historical Society and Cumberland County Cultural and Heritage Commission host this get-together for artists and the community. I had the pleasure of painting with other artists while listening to live bluegrass music on a brilliantly sunny day. My watercolor sketch of “The Snake Brothers Band” is below. Great fun talking with everyone who stopped by to check out the art in progress!

Heading north on Route 611, the road curves along the Delaware River.  From the river banks, you can see Marble Hill.  Such a beautiful spot.  Hurry up spring, so I can get back to touring for great subjects!

I came across this old barn in the town of Mullica Hill.  These treasures are slowly disappearing, whether it is from harsh weather or community growth.  I can’t resist painting these structures, especially when they are lit up by the sun.

After The Storm is painted on 140# Arches cold press watercolor paper.  It was painted as a demo for the Salem County Art League.

Mood’s Farm Market is a local landmark in Southern NJ.  The rusty orange windmill against a sweeping blue sky was striking in contrast.  I purposely pushed the color saturation to hopefully portray what it felt like to be at the market.  This watercolor painting will remind me of the beautiful day I experienced picking apples while walking through the orchard.  I’ll be back there come spring!

The sign reads, No Trespassing!
This old barn was drenched in sunlight, so I had to paint this scene.
“No Trespassing” watercolor depicts one of the many vanishing landscapes being replaced by a growing community. I love seeing active farms while driving in southern New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland and hope they don’t fall by the wayside. There is nothing better than fresh produce from the farm! Buy local!

This painting was a progressive demo for my watercolor workshop.  It is painted on 140# Arches cold press watercolor paper.

This Sundowner rose grows in the flower bed next to my home.  As the trees around me have grown, so has the lack of sun. Because of the abundant shade, this rose bush produced only two blooms. Looks like I will be moving it to a sunnier location come spring! Lots of glazing was used to create the glowing color of this sundowner rose watercolor. “Our Spot” watercolor was my final painting for the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition.  I had visited Winterthur two years ago in the spring and loved this particular tree that was stretching out over a bench.  Thought it was in the azalea garden and it took me quite awhile to find it in the peony garden.  The spot was even more beautiful with the fall color bursting around the garden bench.  While painting, I wondered how many had rested or had a conversation in that exact spot.

This competition ended with a gala held at Winterthur Museum & Gardens in the visitor center.  There had to be over 400 paintings from 75 artists.  Every sale benefits The Children’s Beach House, a nonprofit which helps special needs children.  www.cbhinc.org

Thank you to everyone that lent a hand to this competition.  Can’t wait to participate again next fall!

It poured rain non-stop on the 3rd day of the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition! I chose to paint at Haskells (Hill Girt Farm, a local landmark) located in Chadds Ford. Such a picturesque location!

This sycamore tree caught my attention with its bare white limbs reaching up to the sky. It was next to one of the smaller stone buildings on the property. The rain made the wet bark look like all the color was running down the trunk into the ground. I thought it would be an impossible painting day! With shelter from a pop-up tent and beach umbrella I gave it a go and it turned out to be an exhausting, but successful day.

75 artists come together through Plein Air Brandywine Valley to support the Children’s Beach House. This is a nonprofit organization that helps special-needs children reach their highest potential as functioning members of their families and the community. Every sale from this competition benefits the Children’s Beach House.  http://www.cbhinc.org

A Grand Era – Watercolor

I was thrilled to be juried into the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition.  For one week, myself and 75 artists were given access to some of the most scenic properties of the Brandywine Valley, including private estates, land preserves, and renowned DuPont properties.  The week closed with an exhibit and sale of all artwork at Winterthur Museum. Every sale benefits Children’s Beach House, a nonprofit that focuses on special-needs children.  www.cbhinc.org

The beauty of these locations was overwhelming. For the first day of painting I chose Auburn Heights Preserve and Marshall Steam Museum located in Yorklyn, Delaware.  This 1897 Auburn Heights mansion was built overlooking the Marshall Brothers Paper Mill in Yorklyn, Delaware by Israel and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Marshall.

The stone turrets were especially interesting.  The sun was very fleeting and in spite of the cold and gray day, I really enjoyed painting this former home.  I can only imagine the opulent lifestyle this Victorian family lived.  Thus, the painting name “A Grand Era”.

A lot of hard work goes into coordinating these plein air events.  Thank you to everyone for all of your hard work in bringing plein air artists together to support the Children’s Beach House.

The collecting and restoring of antique autos is a lifelong passion equal to that of an artist. The idea of this watercolor painting came from the owner of this beautiful 1948 Willys Overland Jeepster. His dairy barn was the perfect setting. The chickens were a little whimsy thrown in! I thought showing the sliding barn doors added more interest. My brother and sister-inlaw helped slide those barn doors around while I took lots of reference photos. Fun painting from concept to finish!  Thank you to John and Cecily.

I participated in the Cohansey Riverfest Plein Air Competition in Bridgeton, NJ a few weeks ago.  The criterion was to portray the Cohansey River Watershed.  I was really torn choosing which view would make for a better painting, Mary Elmer Lake or the outflow from the dam.  Rain was threatening and the sun was hard to find, so the outflow view was the best choice.  It all worked out to a great day of painting outdoors and a 1st place award.

This plein air competiton was sponsored by the Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage Commission and Gallery 50 in Bridgeton, NJ.  Thank you to Matt and Gallery 50!

This painting is part of the Nature & The Landscape, An Environmental Perspective exhibit which runs through September 27th at Gallery 50.  There are 90 beautiful paintings on display.

This is the 3rd watercolor painting completed for the Cedarburg Plein Air competition.  It is of geraniums at the original Dietrich fieldstone dairy barn from the turn of the century.  I can’t resist those stone barns, and the red geraniums were a plus.  Thanks to John and Cecily who were so gracious to let me paint on their property.

It is great fun to compete in plein air.  Really pushes you to become a better artist, and you get to meet lots of other artists.

“Cheers To You!” is the second watercolor painted for the Cedarburg Plein Air competition.  Such a fun event!  Lots of mist while painting.  I was so happy to see the sun so I could drop in the shadows.

I chose this subject because of the lovely blue doors and brilliant green ivy on this historic building which currently houses The Cedar Creek Winery.  I also love the coined corners that can be found throughout the town of Cedarburg, WI.  Originally the Cedar Creek Settlement (circa 1864), it was a working woolen mill until 1969 when it went out of business due to the introduction of synthetic fabrics.

The winery is not only beautiful, but produces some mighty tasty wine!

Last week I was one of 160 artists participating in a plein air competition.  The weather was a mixed bag, fog, mist, rain and sun which made watercolor painting a real challenge.  Still, it was a fabulous week of painting throughout the town of Cedarburg, WI.  There were so many interesting subjects to explore in a week!

“The Harness Maker’s House” watercolor is of the Charles Hinze House, a harness maker (circa 1860s).  The view looks west past the original well pump to the rare story and a half fieldstone barn.  This glimpse of a bygone era can still be enjoyed while driving down the original Green Bay Road in Historic Cedarburg.

Every year in late spring the apple trees in our backyard burst with flowers and color.  This watercolor is something that I’ve wanted to paint for several years.  What interested me were the shadows cast on the pale petals.  It is painted on 140lb Arches coldpress watercolor paper.

The Green Barn Watercolor

The weather is warm and the sky is blue which equals a perfect day to paint en plein air.  This barn is located in Mullica Hill, NJ and currently houses a shop called The French Nest (home decor) and Canteen (a unique eatery).  One Saturday, a friend and I set up our easels and tried to capture this green barn in watercolor.  The challenge was a study of greens and how to differentiate the scene when everything has the same local color.

The images below show the initial drawing and color block-in.

The following Saturday, this painting continued as part of a watercolor demonstration during the Arts Festival in town.  Thunder storms rolled in, so it had to be finished in-studio.

I am thrilled this painting will be part of the township’s permanent collection!

This is a view seen up and down the eastern seaboard.  It is of dune grasses waving in the breeze along the shore on a beautiful summer day.  I love the dynamic clouds that form over the ocean along with that panoramic view giving one the feeling of wide open space.  “The Shore” watercolor is painted on 140# Arches cold press. These tulips were a gift and they reminded me how enjoyable it is to paint directly instead of from a photograph.  For me it is easier to see color, light and dark when painting directly.  You don’t always have that opportunity, but when it presents itself, you have to go with it.

I think everyone is waiting for spring these days, that’s what inspired the title of this watercolor.  This beautiful farm from Salem County, NJ was painted using a limited palette of Ultramarine Blue, Yellow Ochre and Burnt Umber.

The past couple weeks we have had lots of snow and it’s too cold outside to be enjoyable.  That is what prompted me to paint Sunflowers.  I tried to capture the beautiful contrast of bright yellows against a blue sky.  Looking forward to warmer days!

In this watercolor painting “Apples and Pears” I wanted to paint a simple subject and play up the sunlight and cast shadows.   I haven’t painted fruit since my school days and was surprised at the difficulty.  Liquid mask was used on the stems to allow me to paint through the background.

The second painting is a version of the same subject which was a demo for my watercolor workshop.  The change in composition was a bit of an improvement.

Across the street from my father’s home is a well-tended patch of peonies.  They were lit up by the sunlight which I thought would make a lovely watercolor painting.

I like the way artist Soon Warren mixes her pigments to achieve an intense dark background without using black.  The peonies were the perfect subject.  I mixed Hooker’s Green, Burnt Sienna and Prussian Blue, leaning towards the green and blue to achieve this color.  It took me a couple applications to get it right.

I took a walk on a sunny day with my camera earlier this month and saw a wide variety of crocus flowers throughout the neighborhood.  In this watercolor painting I wanted a very muted background to emphasize the change from winter to spring.  It is painted on Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper.

This painting is part of an exhibition showing from May 4th through the first week in June at the Gloucester County College.

Key Biscayne’s Crandon Park is one of the best beaches near Miami.  I love that it has huge palm trees on the beach.  This watercolor was painted as a gift to someone who also loves this beach, maybe more than me.  It is painted on 140 lb D’Arches watercolor paper.  I masked out the trunks of the palms which let me paint the sky, water & beach with more flow, but in hindsight I would only have masked the lifeguard stand.

I’ve started the watercolor paintings from the St. Thomas sketches. Above is the Hibiscus, which are everywhere in a variety of shapes and colors. I liked this variety because it was not your typical hibiscus.  As a botanical study it works, but I may try another with a more tropical colored background.

This painting is currently on exhibit at Gloucester County College.
