I loved walking down a grassy path and discovering this springhouse with a row of hay bales sitting atop a back pasture. There were still a few good hours of sunlight left for day one of the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition, so I set up my easel and got to work!

Most older farms employed a springhouse. Some were built directly over a spring, others were built from fieldstone and used to keep water, milk and staples cool. This springhouse is part of the Coverdale Farm Preserve in Greenville, DE.

Plein Air Brandywine valley is more than a painting and photography competition. It is a fundraiser for Children’s Beach House, a nonprofit that focuses on special-needs children. www.cbhinc.org Over 70 artists paint and photograph during 4 days at different locations throughout the Brandywine Valley.
