My father built these birdhouses. They are a source of entertainment while we sit and talk in the gazebo. I love the whimsy of it along with the bright colors, but mostly I painted this scene because it makes me happy.
The build below shows under washes of lemon yellow and permanent rose to create interest in the sky. Multiple glazes of cerulean, cobalt and ultramarine were used before the clouds were lifted.

/ July 26, 2012Beautiful! And your father is certainly a very creative man. I LOVE that he put a lighthouse on the top, what a wonderful idea! You have captured the colours so vividly, I have been thinking about adding birdhouses to my garden, so thanks for the inspiration 🙂

/ July 26, 2012This painting is so, so, so beautiful! And yes, it does make one happy — just to look at it. I love watercolors and acrylics, and I am trying to learn to paint in both. I’m a writer and teacher by trade, and those have always been my strong points. I used to think I could never paint anything worth looking at — and frankly, at this point, I really haven’t (not false modesty, just practical truth). However, I have become the most avid watcher of three painting instruction programs on public television and have now been convinced that I am at least capable of producing something acceptable. So I have finally takent the plunge to buy the paints and brushes and BEGIN!
Mostly I have discovered the total stress-release and joy that I experience when I am painting. I don’t have a desire to become a great artist, but to paint something pleasant just for the sheer joy and total relaxation of doing it. Your work has kicked up my inspiration level to a new high, and I wanted to say thank you. Keep posting these beautiful works, and congratulations on being “Freshly Pressed.”
I’m going to share this page on my Facebook page so others will come and visit.

/ July 26, 2012Thank you for your kind thoughts. Art brings both the artist and the viewer a lot of joy. At times it can be really challenging, but you can learn volumes by joining a local art league. Most have a speaker who will do a demonstration each month. I still take classes when I can and never miss a demonstration no matter what the medium. Enjoy.

/ July 26, 2012Having always assumed that artistic creativity flows, the idea of ‘building’ a painting intriques me.

/ July 26, 2012Yvonne, that is so beautiful. I feel like I can reach out and touch the bird. I know what
memories something like that can bring you year after year because it reminded me of
the birdhouses my dad used to build. Isn’t it funny how something so simple can bring
you so much joy. Thanks for sharing and thanks for bringing back some memories of
my dad too. You have such a talent.
