Azalea Woods

Spent a spring day at Winterthur Museum and Gardens with my sister-in-law. Go in late April, early May for an explosion of color in Azalea Woods. Walked ourselves silly and took a bazillion reference photos.

This watercolor was painted in studio. I wanted to make the shadows darker to pop the whites. You can see the difference from my reference photo to the painting. Knowing when to stop is always the challenge, so I stopped. You always want to add that one more stroke you think will make or break a painting. Overall I think it was successful.

Bullitt House Gardens

Who doesn’t love the Quick Draw event during Plein Air Easton. Yes, it is crazy hot, usually in the high 90s. But so worth it because the caliber of art is amazing. Hard to believe what can be accomplished in two hours. That means in a frame on your easel and ready to be sold.

The Bullitt House and gardens are a perfect subject and a lot of artists chose this locations. I can attest that no two paintings looked alike. Time is limited, but you are allowed to set up your easel ahead of time. You cannot put a mark on your canvas till you hear the start horn. The thumbnail is the only reason I can get through the event. It is a blueprint, a plan, gives you a bit of confidence before you start.

Ah, That Cohansey Feeling – Watercolor

Large open areas of land, water, and sky are magical. They draw you in with their untouched beauty which makes one feel that time is standing still. At this location, I felt like I could breathe, and when I did, the quiet sounds of song birds could be heard.

“Ah, That Cohansey Feeling” watercolor was painted for the Nature And The Landscape annual competition at Gallery 50 in Bridgeton, NJ. I think others felt what I painted, as it received Honorable Mention.

This painting is currently part of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society’s 2019 Members Exhibition of Works on Paper through February 22nd, 2019. Boyer Gallery at the Hill School in Pottstown, PA.

Two Gander Farm – Watercolor

The Miller Farm, better known as Two Gander Farm opened their property for artists as part of the Land Art Events, Farm to Table Plein Air, happening on September 29th. Artists are painting at different locations throughout the different seasons. For more information https://www.landartevents.com I had the pleasure of painting on site in early spring with my friend George Gallatig at this beautiful farm. We got rained out, so this was completed in studio. It will be interesting to be there again this Sunday for a day of painting in a completely different season. In the photos below you can see us tucked along the tree line.

The Last Covered Bridge – Watercolor

This really is the last covered bridge in Wisconsin. I painted this for Cedarburg Plein Air. The challenge was the constant color changes in the water as the sun moved. Spent most of the day painting in this beautiful park shown in the image below.

What’s In The Cupboard? – Watercolor

Royal Port Antiques in Salem, NJ has hosted me during the Arts-In-Bloom studio tour over the past three years. It is a pleasure to pull these wonderful antiques into a still life and paint for the day. Because of all the old crackled paint on the cupboard, I painted on Arches 300# rough paper. The table I had my still life setup sold by the end of the day! The initial drawing and still life is shown below. I am using Hahnemühle watercolor paper which is a bit softer compared to Arches.

Color of Winter

This watercolor was painted during the Chadds Ford Paint Out on February 1st. Winter exposed these gnarly trees along the creek and there was enough light left on a very cold day to get one more painting completed. So glad I did because the colors are beautiful in this season, you just have to bundle up, get out there, and enjoy them.

Kuerner’s Barn

I love painting at Kuerner Farm, also known as Ring Farm, a historic farm in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania made famous by Andrew Wyeth. Honestly, I did not love it so much on this windy, freezing day during the Chadds Ford Paint Out. My easel blew over a few times and I could not keep from shaking in the wind, so this one is only half a plein air because I completed the painting from the warmth of my home. There are some days you are not meant to paint en plein air! Still, it is a lovely painting in need of a new home.

Reflections Watercolor

Last painting for Cedarburg Plein Air. The white birches set off this little scene beautifully. They were a needed contrast to all the color reflections in the pond. It was so incredibly hot this day. You wouldn’t know it from the painting, but I was tucked under trees hiding in the shade soaking up the coolness and quiet of this property.

Red Roof Barn Watercolor

I love any type of barn, but one with a red roof that is striking in a landscape, well, for that reason alone I chose to paint “Red Roof Barn”. It certainly didn’t hurt that it was a fabulously sunny day for painting, couldn’t ask for anything more. Had this spot all to myself during Cedarburg Plein Air, except for the few visitors shown below.

Silver Creek Watercolor

My “quick paint” at Cedarburg Plein Air. What, how much time from time stamp to framing, two hours, yikes! Yes, I painted like a crazy person with spectators looking over my shoulder. Once you forget they’re there and remember to breathe, everything falls into place. Great fun! Getting a watercolor to dry and in a frame is another story.

Check out the amber plexiglass on top of the easel below. Got it from fellow artist Annie Strack, and it really is helpful to see values in the field!

Looking Up Watercolor

Painted during Cedarburg Plein Air competition. I had a hard time choosing a subject this day, probably because I felt overwhelmed with choices. If someone says, here, paint this, you have no problem and get painting straight away. During a plein air competition it is a completely different thought process. You ask yourself: Can I complete this in the allotted time? Is the light good? Is the subject interesting? Would someone else like it. What it really comes down to is do I like it? And the answer was YES! I was interested in the tops of buildings and thought the Cedarburg Art Museum would be a great choice. This is when you hope your sketching skills are strong because they really are the base of all paintings.

This painting was recently donated to Cedarburg Art Museum for their auction to support the museum.

Fine Rye Grist Watercolor

“Fine Rye Grist” Watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 20 x 16, Sold)

“Fine Rye Grist” watercolor was painted during the Cedarburg Plein Air competition in Wisconsin. Pictured is the Concordia Grist Mill, located in the Hamilton Historic District, and was built in 1853 by Edward Janssen and William Gaitsch. I took some liberties by changing the street out front to a dirt road. This is now a private residence. Around back you can see where the creek flowed through the mill. Really cool place!

Cedarburg, Wisconsin never fails with interesting painting subjects. The busy town has all kinds of great architecture, both old and new. “Purple and Gold” watercolor was painted on the last day of the Cedarburg Plein Air competition. I chose this building because it was so different. The longer you looked, the more detail you saw. Of course, that always equals a difficult painting because you want to get it right. So happy this painting has found a home in this beautiful building.

Napley Green – Watercolors

I was in Rockhall, MD to paint these two watercolors. The sketches and preliminary drawings shown below were done on site and the two paintings were completed in studio. I was stunned by the beauty and vastness of the property when I arrived. So quiet and serene. Sometimes it is overwhelming of what to portray. Luckily there were two paintings to be completed, but honestly, I could have painted many more beautiful scenes in this location.

“Napley Green” watercolors were commissioned gifts to the property owners. It is often more time consuming to paint a commission because you want it to be exactly what the person had in mind. So that equals a bit of corespondence back and forth. You take extra care in planning and executing, all the while hoping it will meet expectations. I’m happy to say the recipients were thrilled. What a fabulous gift from their friends.

Pitman Art Stroll – Moods Farm

What a great way to spread art through a community. My watercolor “Moods Farm” was one of 30 selected artworks to be included in the annual Pitman Art Stroll. Each banner hanging in town is printed with the artwork and a little bio from each artist. The originals are on exhibit at Pitman Gallery till the end of September. Great fun! Great event! Great gallery, check it out!

“Moods Farm” watercolor depicts an icon in Southern New Jersey. I wanted to capture the beautiful colors to be found at this farm stand. It is apple and pumpkin picking season, so stop by and get a few.

You know the famous movie scene, well, still a great subject to paint. Having a little fun painting a street scene as a progressive demo in my last workshop. Cityscapes and figures are always a challenge to paint. Simplifying the abundance of signage was key.

Little Cupcake – Watercolor

“Little Cupcake” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 19 x 23, Sold)

NYC is bustling no matter what part of town you find yourself. This storefront caught my eye mostly because of the way the light was casting shadows, but also because of the contrast in the shop name to the busy street. I tried to play up the red stop hand in the crossing light as if it was beaconing one to stop in and have a little cupcake. During my last workshop, it was requested to paint a street scene with figures, so this scene was my first thought since I felt so strongly about it when I photographed it. Workyard – Watercolor

“Workyard” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Sold)

“Workyard” was painted during the annual Artists’ Day In Mauricetown. This is an amazing little historical town with lots of great painting subjects within a few blocks. The day was hot, but the bluegrass music was cool and so were the locals strolling around to check out all the artwork being created.
