Red Pops – Quickpaint

red_pops_mucci_watercolor

“Red Pops” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14)

“Red Pops” was yet another tough quick paint for me. Besides it only being a 2 hour window for painting and framing, it had to be 90 degrees in town. I found a bit of shade and a few red poppies and gave it a go. Luckily before I had my paper stamped I found my palette missing, quick trip home and I was good to go, or so I thought.

2 hours goes quick, I was just about running up the street with my framed painting to make the time cutoff. So I lived to paint another day at the Cedarburg Plein Air competition! Eventually I will master these quick paints! Till then, they are memories which make me laugh, roll my eyes, and cringe at the same time!

Hayrake – Watercolor

“Hayrake” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 14 x 11, Sold)

A retired hayrake sits rusting in front of a well preserved blue-gray barn in the Hamilton Historic District. This glade leading up to the barn glowed in the late afternoon sun. It was magical! Best part was being able to enjoy the company of friends while I finished painting.

“Hayrake” was painted during the Cedarburg Plein Air competition. Fabulous event, even better people. Thank you to Cecily and John who give me free reign to paint on their property.

Twisted – Watercolor

“Twisted” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 16 x 20, Sold)

“Twisted at Turn Halle” was painted for the Plein Air Cedarburg event in Wisconsin. This 1867 fieldstone building sits in the Hamilton Historic District. The twisted tree made for an interesting subject, constantly turning in every direction.

The weather was perfect which resulted in some really strong painting from 150 artists. Thank you to my hosts, whom I treasured time spent. Love everything about this event except that it was a week earlier. Have to say that I missed being able to stroll the town during Strawberry Fest. Hopefully next year!

White Barn – Watercolor

“pleasant_valley_mucci_watercolor"

“White Barn” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 20 x 16, Available)

“White Barn” watercolor was painted during the Chestertown RiverArts “Paint The Town” plein air competition. Rich with farms, the area is not lacking for subject matter. Everything about this barn drew me in. Sitting on a little hill, multiple silos, wide open landscape, and the white washed wood with green trim, how could I resist!

After a full day of painting, RiverArts hosted the artists to a banquet of homemade dishes. YUM! Nice to break bread with fellow artists and hear stories of the unforgiving weather everyone experienced. Thank you to everyone at RiverArts who made sure we were all taken care of and provided a well attended artist reception.

Faded Blues – Watercolor

“Faded Blues” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14, available)

When it is full summer and you’re painting plein air, sometimes you want a subject without a lot of green. That’s one of the reasons I chose to paint “Faded Blues”. Loved the old wood and missing shutter on this building that was being restored. It used to be a general store on Still Pond Road.

Such a rainy week for the Chestertown RiverArts “Paint The Town” plein air competition, but it did not stop any of the artists from producing quality work. The misting actually helped me apply texture on the blue clapboard.

“Creekside” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14, available)

“Creekside” watercolor was painted on a gorgeous day of plein air painting at the end of Rileys Mill Road in Chestertown, MD. Sunshine peaked in and out of the clouds all day at RiverArts 7th Annual “Paint The Town” plein air competition. I loved the duck blind sitting on the edge of the creek and the silver reflections of sky.

“White Swan B&B” watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14, available)

So how does a watercolor artist paint in the rain? By bringing your big beach umbrella and crossing your fingers! My quick paint experiences are never great, full of stress, and limited to two hours including framing. But I do them to challenge myself. Pushing to make quick decisions on color and composition.

“White Swan Tavern” was painted for the RiverArts 7th Annual “Paint The Town” plein air competition in Chestertown, MD. The 18th century Bed and Breakfast is located near Washington College in the center of Chestertown historic district.

Had a great time painting at the RiverArts 7th Annual “Paint The Town” in Chestertown, MD. We could paint anywhere in picturesque Kent County. Betterton Beach was beautiful in the pouring rain! I simplified the dock a bit to give the overall painting a peaceful feel.

Such a fun plein air competition, I’ll definitely be back next year to paint the town! Special thanks goes out to Cindy for her fabulous hospitality.

Morning Walk watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14, Sold)

Morning Walk watercolor was painted during the Plein Air Brandywine Valley exhibit at Winterthur Museum and Garden.  It depicts a little hiking trail behind Winterthur called Chandler Woods. I walked this trail and the adjacent meadow just on the outskirts of Winterthur after turning in my remaining paintings for the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition. Great fun painting and conversing with patrons!

I have to say thank you to every person who had a hand in making this event a success.  The tireless hours spent procuring locations, coordinating artists, feeding artists, exhibiting and selling the artwork is greatly appreciated!  Every sale benefits Children’s Beach House, a nonprofit that focuses on children with special needs. http://www.cbhinc.org

As far as painting locations go, one can never go wrong with Winterthur Museum and Gardens.  Day four of Plein Air Brandywine valley was spent near the gazebo. I wanted a different subject that played against all the bursting fall color.

This painting was donated to Children’s Beach House to be sold during their Winter White event on December 4th. Children’s Beach House is a nonprofit that focuses on special-needs children. http://www.cbhinc.org   What a fabulous event for a great cause!

Indian Summer watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 20 x 16, Sold)

Imagine being able to walk through pastures of an amazing property and paint anywhere you wish! That was my experience at the Bright property on day three of the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition. I set up my easel on one of the back pastures with rolling hills on all sides and painted the view of the main barn. The title, Indian Summer, describes this day in late October which was filled with warm sunshine and beautiful fall colors.

Met lots of other artists and photographers, all enjoying this location while creating stunning artwork to help support Children’s Beach House, a nonprofit that focuses on special-needs children.  www.cbhinc.org  All of the artwork was then put up for exhibit and sale over the weekend at Winterthur Museum and Gardens.

Garden View watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14, Sold)

Around the corner from the Blacksmith Shop in Marshallton, PA there is a large federal style home with a garden out back. Late afternoon sunlight lit up these huge hydrangea against the stone building.

Garden View watercolor was my last painting before the sun disappeared.  That late afternoon sun is golden which added to the color in both the stone and hydrangeas.

This watercolor was painted as part of Plein Air Brandywine Valley which benefits Children’s Beach House.  http://www.cbhinc.org   Thank you to the art patron who purchased this painting.  Every sale benefits Children’s Beach House and I am thrilled to be a participant in this event.

Welcome To The Inn watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 16 x 20, Sold)

Welcome To The Inn watercolor depicts the Marshalton Inn located in Marshallton, PA.  This was my choice for day two of the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition.  There are many beautiful historic buildings along Strasburg Road located about four miles west of West Chester.  The town was filled with artists and photographers capturing the many subjects along the main street. Amazing day!

I love the stone work on the Inn and the way the shadows cast across the different textures.  It was quite the challenge, but well worth it because I received the honor of 2nd place for this watercolor. Such a thrill when your name is called, especially when you were not expecting it!  Thank you to everyone who enjoyed my painting enough to choose it as a winner.

Springhouse at Coverdale watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14, Sold)

I loved walking down a grassy path and discovering this springhouse with a row of hay bales sitting atop a back pasture.  There were still a few good hours of sunlight left for day one of the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition, so I set up my easel and got to work!

Most older farms employed a springhouse.  Some were built directly over a spring, others were built from fieldstone and used to keep water, milk and staples cool. This springhouse is part of the Coverdale Farm Preserve in Greenville, DE.

It is a fundraiser for Children’s Beach House, a nonprofit that focuses on special-needs children.  www.cbhinc.org  Over 70 artists paint and photograph during 4 days at different locations throughout the Brandywine Valley.  It ends with a gala at Winterthur for an exhibit and sale of all artwork. Coverdale Farm Preserve, located in Greenville Delaware, was my painting location site for day one of the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition. Plein Air Brandywine Valley 2015,  Juried Competition to benefit Children’s Beach House

Tomorrow, at sunrise, I’ll be setting up my easel in the beautiful Brandywine Valley to paint alongside some of the best plein air painters and photographers. 75 to be exact!  During the next four days, we’ll capture a wide variety of scenic properties located in the Brandywine Valley.  Last year the weather was a bit wet, but it did not hinder this fabulous event.  Looks like sunshine will be in abundance, so I can’t wait to start painting!

Each artist submits at least four paintings which are judged and then displayed for viewing and purchase at an opening gala scheduled for Friday, October 23 from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at The Visitor Center of Winterthur Museum and Garden located in Wilmington, DE.  Gala tickets can be purchased online www.pleinairbrandywinevalley.org  A portion of the proceeds from the art sales will benefit Children’s Beach House. A great organization doing a world of good!  www.cbhinc.org

The works will remain on display for purchase and viewing throughout the remainder of the weekend and are free to the public. (Saturday, October 24, 2015 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday, October 25, 2015 from noon – 3 p.m.) I’ll be at Winterthur Saturday and Sunday afternoon if anyone wants to stop by and check out all the artwork.  It really is a beautiful exhibit!

Gingerbread – Cedarburg Plein Air

Gingerbread watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Gingerbread watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Day two and three of Cedarburg Plein Air found me in the middle of town with way too many subject choices. I could spend weeks painting and only touch upon the abundance of interesting surroundings.

The Gingerbread embellishment on the 1849 Kuehfuss house is what drew me in. Of course once you start it, you ask yourself why in the world did I choose this building. So much detail for plein air, but the way the light hit the building and the picket fence made me jump in with both feet. Besides, figuring it out is half the challenge!

Downtown was full of people and I think most stopped to chat or take a look at the process. At one point I felt like I was giving a watercolor demo. The kids had the best questions!

This painting was not exhibited at the cultural center. I wish we were allowed to exhibit more than two paintings for the main event.

This watercolor painting is available for purchase.

The weather was great for the Salem County Arts In Bloom tour! Our Spot watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 20 x 16, Sold)

“Our Spot” watercolor was my final painting for the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition.  I had visited Winterthur two years ago in the spring and loved this particular tree that was stretching out over a bench.  Thought it was in the azalea garden and it took me quite awhile to find it in the peony garden.  The spot was even more beautiful with the fall color bursting around the garden bench.  While painting, I wondered how many had rested or had a conversation in that exact spot.

This competition ended with a gala held at Winterthur Museum & Gardens in the visitor center.  There had to be over 400 paintings from 75 artists.  Every sale benefits The Children’s Beach House, a nonprofit which helps special needs children.  www.cbhinc.org

Where The Sycamore Grows – Watercolor

Where The Sycamore Grows watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 16 x 20, Sold)

It poured rain non-stop on the 3rd day of the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition! I chose to paint at Haskells (Hill Girt Farm, a local landmark) located in Chadds Ford. Such a picturesque location!

This sycamore tree caught my attention with its bare white limbs reaching up to the sky. It was next to one of the smaller stone buildings on the property. The rain made the wet bark look like all the color was running down the trunk into the ground. I thought it would be an impossible painting day! With shelter from a pop-up tent and beach umbrella I gave it a go and it turned out to be an exhausting, but successful day.

A Grand Era – Watercolor

A Grand Era watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed

A Grand Era watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 16 x 20, Available)

I was thrilled to be juried into the Plein Air Brandywine Valley competition.  For one week, myself and 75 artists were given access to some of the most scenic properties of the Brandywine Valley, including private estates, land preserves, and renowned DuPont properties.  The week closed with an exhibit and sale of all artwork at Winterthur Museum. Every sale benefits Children’s Beach House, a nonprofit that focuses on special-needs children.  www.cbhinc.org

The beauty of these locations was overwhelming. For the first day of painting I chose Auburn Heights Preserve and Marshall Steam Museum located in Yorklyn, Delaware.  This 1897 Auburn Heights mansion was built overlooking the Marshall Brothers Paper Mill in Yorklyn, Delaware by Israel and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Marshall.

The stone turrets were especially interesting.  The sun was very fleeting and in spite of the cold and gray day, I really enjoyed painting this former home.  I can only imagine the opulent lifestyle this Victorian family lived.  Thus, the painting name “A Grand Era”.

A lot of hard work goes into coordinating these plein air events.  Thank you to everyone for all of your hard work in bringing plein air artists together to support the Children’s Beach House.

Leaving Mary Elmer – Plein Air Watercolor

Leaving Mary Elmer watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Leaving Mary Elmer watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 11 x 14)

I participated in the Cohansey Riverfest Plein Air Competition in Bridgeton, NJ a few weeks ago.  The criterion was to portray the Cohansey River Watershed.  I was really torn choosing which view would make for a better painting, Mary Elmer Lake or the outflow from the dam.  Rain was threatening and the sun was hard to find, so the outflow view was the best choice.  It all worked out to a great day of painting outdoors and a 1st place award.

This plein air competiton was sponsored by the Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage Commission and Gallery 50 in Bridgeton, NJ.  Thank you to Matt and Gallery 50!

This painting is part of the Nature & The Landscape, An Environmental Perspective exhibit which runs through September 27th at Gallery 50.  There are 90 beautiful paintings on display.

Cheers To You! watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 16 x 20, Sold)

“Cheers To You!” is the second watercolor painted for the Cedarburg Plein Air competition.  Such a fun event!  Lots of mist while painting.  I was so happy to see the sun so I could drop in the shadows.

I chose this subject because of the lovely blue doors and brilliant green ivy on this historic building which currently houses The Cedar Creek Winery.  I also love the coined corners that can be found throughout the town of Cedarburg, WI.  Originally the Cedar Creek Settlement (circa 1864), it was a working woolen mill until 1969 when it went out of business due to the introduction of synthetic fabrics.

The winery is not only beautiful, but produces some mighty tasty wine!
