What’s In The Barn – Watercolor

What's In The Barn Watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

What’s In The Barn Watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 17 x 20, Sold)

The collecting and restoring of antique autos is a lifelong passion equal to that of an artist. The idea of this watercolor painting came from the owner of this beautiful 1948 Willys Overland Jeepster. His dairy barn was the perfect setting. The chickens were a little whimsy thrown in! I thought showing the sliding barn doors added more interest. My brother and sister-inlaw helped slide those barn doors around while I took lots of reference photos. Fun painting from concept to finish!  Thank you to John and Cecily.

Ebb and Flow – Watercolor

Ebb and Flow Watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Ebb and Flow Watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 18 x 24, Sold)

A very gray, hazy day resulted in this watercolor painting of the jetty down the shore.  When the tide is at the halfway point, fishing abounds!

This watercolor is part of the “Nature & The Landscape, An Environmental Perspective” exhibition at Gallery 50 in Bridgeton, NJ.  This regional wetlands competition resulted in a lot of gorgeous paintings from artists living in southern New Jersey.

Leaving Mary Elmer – Plein Air Watercolor

Leaving Mary Elmer watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Leaving Mary Elmer watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (sold, Framed 11 x 14)

I participated in the Cohansey Riverfest Plein Air Competition in Bridgeton, NJ a few weeks ago.  The criterion was to portray the Cohansey River Watershed.  I was really torn choosing which view would make for a better painting, Mary Elmer Lake or the outflow from the dam.  Rain was threatening and the sun was hard to find, so the outflow view was the best choice.  It all worked out to a great day of painting outdoors and a 1st place award.

This plein air competiton was sponsored by the Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage Commission and Gallery 50 in Bridgeton, NJ.  Thank you to Matt and Gallery 50!

This painting is part of the Nature & The Landscape, An Environmental Perspective exhibit which runs through September 27th at Gallery 50.  There are 90 beautiful paintings on display.

The sun lit up this little corner bodega in Manhattan.  I was struck by the brightly colored flowers in contrast to the shadowy buildings.  “Saturday Shopping” watercolor is painted on 140# Arches cold press.

Geraniums By The Dairy Barn – Watercolor

watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Geraniums By The Dairy Barn watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 16 x 20, Available)

This is the 3rd watercolor painting completed for the Cedarburg Plein Air competition.  It is of geraniums at the original Dietrich fieldstone dairy barn from the turn of the century.  I can’t resist those stone barns, and the red geraniums were a plus.  Thanks to John and Cecily who were so gracious to let me paint on their property.

It is great fun to compete in plein air.  Really pushes you to become a better artist, and you get to meet lots of other artists.

Cheers To You! Watercolor

Cheers To You watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Sold, Framed 16 x 20)

Cheers To You! watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 16 x 20, Sold)

“Cheers To You!” is the second watercolor painted for the Cedarburg Plein Air competition.  Such a fun event!  Lots of mist while painting.  I was so happy to see the sun so I could drop in the shadows.

I chose this subject because of the lovely blue doors and brilliant green ivy on this historic building which currently houses The Cedar Creek Winery.  I also love the coined corners that can be found throughout the town of Cedarburg, WI.  Originally the Cedar Creek Settlement (circa 1864), it was a working woolen mill until 1969 when it went out of business due to the introduction of synthetic fabrics.

The winery is not only beautiful, but produces some mighty tasty wine!

The Harness Maker’s House Watercolor

The Harness Maker's House by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 20 x 16, Sold)

The Harness Maker’s House watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 20 x 16, Sold)

Last week I was one of 160 artists participating in a plein air competition.  The weather was a mixed bag, fog, mist, rain and sun which made watercolor painting a real challenge.  Still, it was a fabulous week of painting throughout the town of Cedarburg, WI.  There were so many interesting subjects to explore in a week!

“The Harness Maker’s House” watercolor is of the Charles Hinze House, a harness maker (circa 1860s).  The view looks west past the original well pump to the rare story and a half fieldstone barn.  This glimpse of a bygone era can still be enjoyed while driving down the original Green Bay Road in Historic Cedarburg.

Thank you to Ray, Sarah and Noah for being the very best hosts!  I could not have had a successful week without you guys.

Fenwick Creek Watercolor

Fenwick Creek Watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Fenwick Creek Watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 18 x 24)

Fenwick Creek in Salem County New Jersey flows past the original 1918 South Jersey Farmers Exchange building. The Farmers Exchange is now home to Royal Port Antiques. During the Salem County Arts In Bloom tour I painted this view from the side porch. Hard to believe this calm scene was once a busy port.

Thank you to owners Suzanne and Michael who hosted the Salem County Art League. Their shop is full of wonderful antiques that will inspire many paintings! It all added up to a great painting weekend.

The Green Barn Watercolor

The Green Barn watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

The Green Barn watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Sold, Framed 18 x 21)

The weather is warm and the sky is blue which equals a perfect day to paint en plein air.  This barn is located in Mullica Hill, NJ and currently houses a shop called The French Nest (home decor) and Canteen (a unique eatery).  One Saturday, a friend and I set up our easels and tried to capture this green barn in watercolor.  The challenge was a study of greens and how to differentiate the scene when everything has the same local color.

The images below show the initial drawing and color block-in.

The following Saturday, this painting continued as part of a watercolor demonstration during the Arts Festival in town.  Thunder storms rolled in, so it had to be finished in-studio.

The Shore by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 27 x 20, Sold)

I am thrilled this painting will be part of the township’s permanent collection!

This is a view seen up and down the eastern seaboard.  It is of dune grasses waving in the breeze along the shore on a beautiful summer day.  I love the dynamic clouds that form over the ocean along with that panoramic view giving one the feeling of wide open space.  “The Shore” watercolor is painted on 140# Arches cold press. This watercolor is one of 17 paintings that I will be exhibiting at the Galleria Deptford.  The artist reception is Sunday, April 13 from 2 until 4pm.   Galleria Deptford is located in the Deptford Municipal Building, 1st and 2nd floors.  For more information on this venue, visit www.thelivingartsclub.org Click on the above painting to view details. Cedarburg Barn Watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (Framed 18 x 14)

This Red Barn was found while traveling near one of my favorite midwest towns, Cedarburg, Wisconsin.  You could get lost in the wide open space.  There are many barns in this area of the country.  Such a beautiful place.  This watercolor started as a small study for a larger painting and I found myself not stopping till it was a finished piece.

This little wren house is a larger version of a previous watercolor.  I used this as a demo for a watercolor workshop.  It is always helpful to see how another artists develops a painting from start to finish when you’re taking a class.  Each week I would demonstrate different techniques.  It was a lot of fun!

Ann Whitall House – Plein Air

Ann Whitall House Watercolor (Framed 18 x 24)

Ann Whitall House Watercolor (Framed 18 x 24)

The Ann Whitall house is an 18th century historic house at Red Bank Battlefield Park, located on the Delaware River. The pine tree and back of the house were sketched on one of the first nice days in early spring. In spite of the wet spring and summer season I participated in a one-day plein air competition here and chose to paint the river view of the house. I brought my extra-large beach umbrella thinking it would shade me from too much sun. The umbrella saved me and my painting from the two unexpected torrential rain showers. You just have to laugh and go with it, because it was still a great day to be outside painting.

Thanks to the Gloucester County Cultural and Heritage Commission, they really did a nice job with this event.

Spring Crocus Watercolor

Spring Crocus (Framed 20 x 16) by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

I took a walk on a sunny day with my camera earlier this month and saw a wide variety of crocus flowers throughout the neighborhood.  In this watercolor painting I wanted a very muted background to emphasize the change from winter to spring.  It is painted on Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper.

This painting is part of an exhibition showing from May 4th through the first week in June at the Gloucester County College.

Happy Wrens Watercolor

Happy Wrens Watercolor By Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Happy Wrens Watercolor By Yvonne Pecor Mucci

This wren birdhouse has hung in our backyard for years.  My father-in-law made this and my daughter painted it when she was very young.  The wren’s sing to each other all day.

This is a small study (6 x 8) which I did to figure out color and composition for a larger version.  I had the pleasure of painting with a friend and she suggested trying her favorite watercolor paper – 140lb Cold Press, Fabriano Artistico.  I love the way this paper took on a lot of water letting the pigments be manipulated for a longer period of time.  Lifting color was quick and easy.  Now I am looking forward to working on the larger painting.

A Very Fine House …

A Very Fine House, Line Art By Yvonne Pecor Mucci

A Very Fine House, Line Art by Yvonne Pecor Mucci (sold)

Something different for a change!

I did this black and white line art illustration of a home to be used on the owners personal letterhead. When the final application of the artwork will be a reduced reproduction you have to be careful not to be heavy handed with your darks.  They tend to fill in when reduced. This was sketched very lightly in graphite onto acid free smooth bristol paper and inked with a 005 Micron archival and fade proof waterproof pen.  I found it helpful to print my reference photos in black & white.  Personal details like the small shed in the background, windmill, lightning rods, bench and flag all add interest to the sketch.  Funny how I kept humming the lyrics to “Our House” by Crosby Stills Nash & Young while working.  The home owners were really happy with the result.

Pink Oleander Watercolor

Pink Oleanders Watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Pink Oleanders (Framed 18 x 14) By Yvonne Pecor Mucci

These pink oleander flourish down south and in the islands.  This close up view of the flowers gives the painting a little more of an abstract feeling.  It is painted on 140 lb Arches cold press watercolor paper.  The flowers were masked and a large flat brush was used to paint the background.  The leaves were painted and more glazes of color were added to soften and push the foliage into the background.  I wanted the odd centers of the flowers to stand out.

Birdhouses Watercolor

Birdhouses Watercolor By Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Dad’s Birdhouses (Framed 18 x 24) By Yvonne Pecor Mucci (sold)

My father built these birdhouses.  They are a source of entertainment while we sit and talk in the gazebo.  I love the whimsy of it along with the bright colors, but mostly I painted this scene because it makes me happy.

The build below shows under washes of lemon yellow and permanent rose to create interest in the sky.  Multiple glazes of cerulean, cobalt and ultramarine were used before the clouds were lifted.

Palm Tree Watercolor Study

Palm Tree Watercolor (Framed 20 x 24) By Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Palm Tree Watercolor (Framed 20 x 24) By Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Palm trees are really complex.  This watercolor study is painted on Arches 140 lb cold press paper.  Masking fluid was not used on this painting giving me slightly softer edges.  The whispy sky was painted in several glazes using cerulean and ultramarine blues, painted through the palms and lifted from the trunk while damp.  A yellow underpainting gave me warmer and stronger darks.

Secret Harbour Watercolor

Secret Harbour Watercolor (Framed 20 x 24) by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

The painting composition has been changed from the original sketch.  I wanted to include the dynamic clouds that build over St Thomas and the coral reef in the foreground.  People have asked if the water is really that color.  It is that color, depending on the time of day and the amount of sunlight flowing through the crystal clear water.  It is a beautiful thing to observe in person.

Click on the images to get a better view of the detail.

Below is a series of photos taken during the painting process.  I use 140 lb Arches watercolor paper.  I like to keep the colors clean and vibrant.  If you have any questions please contact me via email mucciyvonne@yahoo.com

View of Sapphire Bay, 18 x 24 Framed, Watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

View of Sapphire Bay, 18 x 24 Framed, Watercolor by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Oh, how I wish I was still sitting on this beautiful beach!  I wanted to capture the sea grape trees and the ocean reef.  The trees were masked out and the background blocked in.  Once a general background color was in place I could remove the masking fluid and concentrate on the trees.  I don’t like to leave masking fluid in place for more than color blocking.  It was important to keep the sky palette different from the ocean while incorporating all colors in the trees and reef.

Another beautiful day in St Thomas.  The sketch is of Secret Harbour, a little cove across from Sapphire Beach which is sheltered from the trade winds.  It is like swimming in an aquarium with perfectly calm clear water!  I want to change the format from horizontal to vertical based on the photos taken when the final watercolor is painted.

Sapphire Bay Sketchbook

Sea Grape Trees at Sapphire Bay by Yvonne Pecor Mucci

Sea Grape Trees at Sapphire Bay Sketch

I’ve been visiting St Thomas, US Virgin Islands over the past couple weeks.  Stunning views.  The trade winds were a little too strong for watercolor painting, but my sketchbook came in handy.  Sapphire Bay is breathtaking and the Sea Grape trees provide welcome shade from the sun.  I’ll make this view a little wider to show more of the ocean for the watercolor painting.
